＜アーティストコメント＞
私の作品は羊と人間のハイブリット、羊の頭を持ち人間の体を持つ「羊人間」である。羊と人間の関わりは深く、その歴史は約１万〜8000年前の中石器時代に遡る。羊は家畜としての用途だけでなく、様々な文化で祭りや宗教儀式にも登場し、人間社会に深く関わっている事が伺える。また現代では、羊は初めて体細胞クローン化に成功したほ乳類であり、「ドリー」の名は世界中に「クローン」旋風を巻き起こした。「ドリー」の発表は１９９７年２月２２日、奇しくも私の２０回目の誕生日でもあり、羊との運命的なつながりを感じる。そして私が羊をモチーフにした作品を作る切っ掛けとなったのも、少なからずこの「事件」が影響している。羊の持つイメージは、その大人しい性質から、しばしば人畜無害な動物と人々に印象を与えている。「羊の皮をかぶったオオカミ」と言うことわざから見るように、「羊」イコール「人畜無害」や「弱い」などのイメージ（皮）を、「オオカミ」という「凶暴」で「狡猾」な本質を隠すための「隠れ蓑」として利用される。また「迷える小羊」のようにキリスト教では「羊」は我々人間を表し、「羊飼い」は彷徨う未熟な我々を導く「神」を表している。私は羊の持つ「弱者」や「未熟な者」などのイメージを、我々人間に当てはめ、人間の弱さ、未熟さ、愚かさなどを「羊人間」に投影している。 私の作品の基本テーマは「疑問」である。創作のきっかけとなるアイデアは、個人的な出来事や人間関係にまつわる事柄や、さらに人間社会で起こる様々な出来事などを元に構築される。それらのテーマを元に自分の視点から疑問を投げかけ、風刺の要素も含みつつ、作品を通して観る人々の心の隅に「疑問の種」を植える事が出来れば幸いである。 今回の作品展のメインテーマは「地球温暖化」、「環境問題」、「エネルギー資源」などの自然と人間の関わり合いにある。より高度に発展していく人間社会の恩恵を受け、さらにニューヨークという先進国の大都市で不自由なく生活している中で、多少の後ろめたさと罪悪感を抱きつつ、資源があたかも無尽蔵であるかのごとく過剰摂取してる我々に今後どのような未来が待っているのかと言う不安を感じざるを得ない。またこのような地球規模の問題を目の当たりにした時に我々は何をすれば良いのか、さらに私個人は何を思い何をすれば良いのかと自答自問した結果、この問題に向き合う第一歩として「意識」する事を心がけ、自分の中で少しずつ「疑問の種」に水をやり、その先にどのような「実」が生るのか期待と不安を交えながら育てていきたいと思っている。 「地球を喰らう/Greed」シリーズは、地球の資源を過剰摂取している我々人間の止まる所を知らない「欲望」を表現している。地球という「果実」の汁を吸い、その実をガツガツと貪り喰い、さらに実を喰った後に次の「獲物」に手を伸ばす。体は欲望のままに暴飲暴食を繰り返した結果肥大し、不健康である事は一目瞭然である。この羊たちは「程」を知らず、また誰にも教えられる事もなく、限界を超えようとも己の欲望を満たすために手当り次第に喰い散らかす自制の利かない子供が成長してゆく様を表している。「もっと、もっと」と、あたかも自制の利かない子供のように、要求するのは決して利口な行いだとは思えない。何事も「程」を知る事は賢明であろう。 「融点/Melting Point」は温室効果ガスの著しい増加がその原因とされている「地球温暖化現象」がテーマである。気候の変化よって世界各地で記録を更新する最高気温、熱波に伴い大勢の人々が熱射病や熱中症により体調不良や死亡事故を起こすなどの人体に悪影響を及ぼすケースや、急速に進行する氷河や永久表土の溶解など自然界に悪影響を及ぼしている事例を頻繁に耳にする。「地球温暖化」をテーマにするにあたり、どのような作品でその意図をストレートに、且つコミカルに表現出来るかと試行錯誤している時、茹だるような暑い日にソフトクリームを舐めていると、頭にふとイメージが湧いた。溶けてゆくアイスクリームの様子を温暖化によって溶けてゆく氷河に準えて「羊人間」で再現する事にした。 「依存／An Oil Addict」は、ジョージWブッシュ米大統領がスピーチで発した一言から制作のアイデアを得た。石油は我々の生活には欠かせないエネルギー資源の一つである。我々の生活水準が向上すると共に、その消費量は飛躍的に増加し、各国は自国で消費する石油の確保に苛烈な争奪戦を繰り広げている。世界一の超大国であり、資源の消費量も世界一である米国の大統領が発した一言は、あまりにも白々しく無責任に聞こえ、戦慄が走る思いである。もちろん、石油などのエネルギー資源に依存しているのは米国のみならずいずれの先進国にも当てはまる。元々資源の乏しい日本の石油輸入依存度はほぼ１００％である。更に急速に経済発展を遂げている中国やインドの石油消費量の増加は著しい。しかし、無尽蔵ではない既存のエネルギー資源、更にそれらを消費する事によって及ぼす地球への多大なる悪影響を考えると、我々はそろそろ「中毒」から抜け出す術を真剣に考え、実行する事を始めるべきなのかもしれない。

My artwork is a hybrid of humankind and sheep, pieces that have sheep heads and human bodies. Starting with a self-portrait and inspired by my huge afro at the time, I wanted to relate my portrait to something else and came up with sheep because of their fluffy hair. So initially the pieces started out with human heads and sheep bodies. The historic relationship between sheep and humans is deep and goes back 8 to 10 thousand years. Not only have sheep been used as domestic animals but they have been part of religious ceremonies and festivals across different cultures. In recent history, sheep were the first mammals to be successfully cloned, and news of Dolly, the famous cloned sheep, was bizarre and unnatural to me, going beyond human limits. I recently found out the date that research on Dolly was published, January 22, 1997, was also my 20th birthday, and I really felt a deepened bond with sheep. I felt that sheep would be the perfect animal to use as a metaphor for human shortcomings. This was all very influential. People usually think about sheep as friendly, harmless, weak animals, and in the saying, “a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” the sheep’s image is used as camouflage to hide the wolf’s brutalness and cunning. Also in Christianity, the sheep is following the Shepard like humans follow God. In the guise of sheep, I am depicting human frailties and shortcomings. The main theme of my artwork is focused on questioning. The sources of the ideas are picked up from my own life experiences, starting from personal experiences and expanding into what’s happening in the world, including history, current events and future issues. Based on these themes, I question why it’s happening, what’s the real meaning, and I want to point out these issues to people. I would be very happy if my pieces trigger discussions with those who see my artwork. Each piece of artwork has a theme from my own point of view, a sarcastic nuance, and I want to a plant a seed in the viewers’ hearts and minds. The main theme of this show is the environment with a focus on global warming and scarce resources. Society is ever expanding, and our daily lives are benefiting from the continual development of society. Especially living in a huge city like New York, I almost feel guilty because there is so much consumption and waste and everything is too much, as if resources are limitless. I’m truly worried about what kind of future is waiting for us if we keep living this way. Also, when we encounter these types of global issues, I ask myself, what should we do, what’s a good solution, and then most importantly, what should I do. As a first step to facing this issue, I decided to raise my awareness and keep these concerns in mind. I wish to water that seed, with both expectation and worry. With every step, I’d like to let it grow and see how it goes. The “Greed” series depicts greed over earth’s resources, and our greed is almost unstoppable. The first piece shows the three growth stages of a child who does not stop consuming and only grows larger, not understanding its limit. Unable to control its desires, he is sucking the juice from the fruit of the earth and eating its flesh, and after eating everything, he’s still reaching for more. All three pieces are fat as a pigs. His body has expanded, getting too fat and growing towards obesity, enlarged from over consumption, and he’s looking unhealthy. This sheep is not raised to understand the concept of moderation, so he doesn’t stop even though he passes the limits of fulfilling his desires beyond his needs. It’s unwise to keep wanting more and more, a very childlike attitude. “Melting Point” focuses on global warming caused by the increase of greenhouse gases due to human activity. High temperatures are breaking records all over the world due to the resulting weather changes, and we hear about heat-stroke deaths and melting glaciers more than ever before. When wondering what kind of piece to create to make the point and at the same time be comical, this idea popped up when I was eating ice cream as relief on a very hot day. I used the melting ice cream as a metaphor of the melting glaciers caused by global warming. “Oil Addict” is an idea that came from a phrase in a George W. Bush speech saying we are addicted to foreign oil and we have to do something about it. Oil is one of the most vital resources, and its consumption is growing in proportion to technological developments and our living standards. All nations are competing to get their own oil supplies to consume. I was shocked to hear the President of the greatest superpower state the obvious. Since the U.S. tops the list in oil consumption, it was a shameless and empty statement because it’s the opposite of the reality. It was a phrase that inspired me. Not only the U.S. but each advanced nation shares the same addiction. For instance, Japan is very short in resources, so they have to rely on imported oil almost 100%. Also in China and India, their rapid development is surely raising the consumption of oil. However, these resources are not renewable. There are limits, and the consumption of these resources is a leading cause affecting the environment, therefore, we should start thinking about breaking the addiction and really getting clean.
